When I am down and, oh my soul, so weary;
When troubles come and my heart burdened be;
Then, I am still and wait here in the silence,
Until you come and sit awhile with me.
You raise me up…
In the course of our day, every encounter with another human being presents an opportunity to raise that person up, leave them neutral (indifferent), or put them down.
In our culture, it seems that there is no lack of people who will put you down as a management technique or in a social situation to display superiority or control. It can be subtle or blatant but the intention of both is to put you down. Really it is unchecked ego resulting from insecurity. It certainly lacks any semblance of class or maturity.
On the other hand, don’t we all enjoy being around that person with the social or managerial skill who raises us up? I believe we all were put on the earth to find and fulfill our purpose. Life can be difficult, lonely and challenging sometimes. That’s why it’s so healthy and refreshing to be raised up, edified and encouraged.
As a coach, I want to offer you three tips on how to raise people up today. 1. Offer everyone you pass today a smile. 2. During a conversation say something that will build the other person up. Be encouraging and complementary. 3. When appropriate hugs are amazing, or maybe a gentle touch on the shoulder or hand. An ancient text says “the touch of an ambassador is healing”.
Finally, as a coach, hopefully it will be said of me, “you raise me up” to be more than I thought could be.
